One thought on “Ornamental Native Grass Overwinters in Container”
Little Bluestem is a native grass of our region. The clump grass was grown in this container the season of 2011. It remained outside over winter and only received the natural moisture. It was exposed to freeze/thaw which often kills container plants outdoors in this USDA Zone 4b-5a. It late spring some green foliage appeared. From then on it was irrigated as needed. By early fall, the Little Bluestem had grown to over five feet tall and began to take on its characteristic purple red color of fall. Neglected, the native grass survived winter and grew again this season under conditions that few ornamental grasses can tolerate.
