Jay Gurney of Yankton Nurseries enjoys growing cacti, succulents, and cactus-like plants such as the Christmas cactus. He notes that Schlumbergera is the genus for Christmas and Thanksgiving cacti, but they are different species with different bloom times. Note the rounded lobes of the modified stems of this plant, unlike the pointed edges of the Thanksgiving species.
