One of the features of the Northern Plains is days of solitude.
I started a stroll around the yard, feeling the burden of a snowy day.
There lay the outline of yarrow in snow I had hadn’t noticed all winter.
Silent birdhouse by one of the deer trails.
Snow is heavy on the spruce,
but contrasts the delicate Joe Pye flower heads.
Months before container gardening starts again!
But hungry birds line up in nearby launch trees for their turn one-by-one at the feeder today.
Some sumac and other fruits and grain remains for wildlife.
A bird feeder clean-up crew sweeps through.
Even in solitude, a clear path out is beautiful.
But for now, green plants, a good book and a little conversation are enough.
