Cottonwood is one of the few native trees that has potential to color well here. It may not look like much right here, but in riparian areas of the Mojave Desert, can be as brilliant yellow as quaking aspens in Colorado. Norway maple happens to be one of the better maples for the Santa Clara Valley, but does not get very big. (It does not naturalize here.)
